What you're looking at
Volkswagen's split-window Type 2 is the bus that carried a generation, and the 23-window Samba layout — skylights along the roof edge, wraparound rear corner glass, a fold-back canvas roof — is the version collectors chase. BADD's bus wears the classic two-tone, listed on its page as "Turquoise & Ivory Two-Tone", on whitewall tires, with a roof rack and a sliding ragtop. Power comes from what the page calls a "1.5L VW 4-Cylinder Engine" — the air-cooled flat-four that lives behind the rear seat — through a manual transmission. The page gives no odometer reading, VIN or restoration history.
The year is the interesting part. Volkswagen's German plants stopped building the split-window bus after the 1967 model year, but Volkswagen do Brasil kept it in production into the mid-1970s, so a split-window titled as a 1972 is almost always a Brazilian-built Kombi. Many of the 23-window buses on the U.S. market with 1970s titles are Brazilian Kombis converted to Samba specification. BADD's page doesn't say where this one was built, or whether its 23 windows left the factory that way — a question that matters a great deal to value (see our estimate) and much less to anyone who just wants to drive one to the beach.
How BADD's monthly drawings work
BADD Worldwide — Bikers Against Drunk Drivers, a Miami organization its site dates to 1983 — gives away a different vehicle at each of several drawings a month, all sold from one tickets page whose featured car changes as each drawing passes. The rules say "Entries are eligible for all giveaways in the current calendar month". October's schedule reads "First Prize: October 8th, Second Prize: October 16th, Third Prize October 23rd", with the fourth drawing on "October 30th, 2026 at 8:00 PM EST".
This 1972 Volkswagen Bus is the October 16 drawing: it's the vehicle shown above the page's Next Drawing In countdown, and its photos are captioned for October 16. That countdown runs out at 8:00 PM Eastern on October 16; the schedule itself prints a clock time only on the October 30 line.
What that means for an entry:
- An October entry made before the bus is drawn is in the bus drawing, and stays in for the October 23 and October 30 drawings, each for its own prize.
- An entry made after October 16 can't win the bus, though it still counts toward whatever October drawings remain.
- The October 8 drawing has already been held, and once the bus is drawn BADD's page moves on to the next vehicle.
Winners "will be drawn LIVE on social media and posted on our website", and "You Do Not Need To Be Present To Win."
The fine print worth knowing
Entries. BADD sells entries as tickets: 1 for $30, 3 for $50, 10 for $100, 35 for $250, 100 for $500 and 300 for $1,000. The page prints its Florida charity registration, "FLORIDA REGISTRATION: CH18378", and BADD's FAQ says "Yes, we are a 501c3 Florida registered Charity #CH18378."
Free entry by mail. The rules offer a no-purchase route: hand-print your name, address, phone number and e-mail on a 3 1/2 by 4 inch index card and send it, with a hand-written self-addressed stamped envelope, to BADD's headquarters at 7130 SW 44th st, Miami FL 33155. "No electronic stamps will be accepted. One entry per envelope only. You may enter as many times as you like" — so each free entry takes two stamps, one on the outer envelope and one on the return envelope. The rules set a single mail deadline for the month, "no later than October 30th, 2026 @ 4:00 PM ET", with no separate cutoff for each drawing, and they don't say whether that means postmarked or received. A card that reaches BADD after the bus has been drawn can only count toward the drawings still to come. The rules box also has a "No Purchase Necessary Rules" button that reveals an older, asterisked copy of the same paragraph with a "March 31st, 2026" deadline, a date that has already passed.
Winning the bus. The bus is awarded in "As is Condition", with no guarantees of any kind. "Winners responsible for Federal Income Tax and all State taxes on prizes." and "All license and registration fees are the sole responsibility of the winner." Collection is on the winner too: "Winners are responsible for Picking up or Arranging Delivery of Prizes." The clock is short — "Winners must arrange for pickup of prizes no more than 2 weeks after winning." and "Winners must pick up their prize within 15 days of winning or will be charged 35$/day in storage fees." followed by "(Failure to do so within 30 days is an automatic forfeit of the prize)". In plain numbers: storage runs $35 a day after day 15, and a winner who hasn't collected by day 30 loses the bus.
Who can enter. "No employees, volunteers, dealers of BADD, Vendors, or vehicle winners who have won in the past 12 months are eligible to enter and win." Anyone who won a BADD vehicle in the past year is out. You don't need to ride: "You DO NOT need to be a biker, own a motorcycle or ever ride a bike to participate." The rules box sets no age or state-residency requirement beyond "Contest is void where prohibited." Entering also means "By entering you permit B.A.D.D., its sponsors, and its third parties to use your information in future promotions and offers."

Why It's Special
Volkswagen's German plants built the split-window Type 2 only through the 1967 model year; Volkswagen do Brasil kept it in production into the mid-1970s, so a 1972 split-window is almost always Brazilian-built. BADD's page doesn't say where this bus was built or whether its 23-window body is factory or a conversion.
Our value estimate
$47,000
BADD's page gives no retail value and no odometer reading, so this is our editorial estimate, not an appraisal. A split-window bus titled as a 1972 is, in practice, a Brazilian-built Kombi (Volkswagen's German plants ended split-window production after the 1967 model year), and the page doesn't say whether this one's 23-window body is factory or a conversion. We've valued it against the three most recent sales we found of Brazilian-built split-window Kombis converted to 23-window Samba specification, all no-reserve Hagerty Marketplace auctions: a 1974 at $42,533 (December 22, 2025), a 1973 at $47,080 (December 22, 2025) and a 1974 at $53,500 (September 2, 2025). All three listed their odometers as true mileage unknown, so mileage played no part in the comparison. Paint, interior and conversion quality explain the spread; this bus's photos show a clean, finished example, which puts it mid-range. A documented German-built Samba Deluxe from the 1950s or '60s is a different, six-figure market.
