Win a 2025 VW ID. Buzz 1st Edition or a Restored 1972 VW Bus Camper
A 335-hp VW ID. Buzz 1st Edition on one side, a nut-and-bolt 1972 VW Bus camper on the other, and a set of official rules that doesn't say quite what the ads do.

Two vans, one key
VanLife US has framed this one as a straight fight between the old religion and the new: a 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz 1st Edition against a restored 1972 VW Bus camper, same silhouette, 53 years apart.
The ID. Buzz is the launch trim, and it's the one you'd want — 335 hp through a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive setup, 231 miles of EPA range, an electrochromic panoramic glass roof that goes from clear to opaque at a touch, 12-way power massaging front seats, Harman Kardon audio, a 12.9-inch center screen, IQ.DRIVE driver assistance and, notably, native access to Tesla's Supercharger network. It is a genuinely fast van; 0–60 comes up quicker than in most of the crossovers it shares a parking lot with.
The 1972 Bus is the one enthusiasts will argue for. VanLife US lists a new 1700cc air-cooled engine, a four-speed manual, brand-new front and rear suspension, front disc and rear drum brakes, new wheels and tires, Italian leather and fabric upholstery in cream and green, custom LED lighting, ceramic coating and a pop-up camper tent. That's a comprehensive rebuild rather than a tidy-up.
Why it matters
The honest comparison isn't about which is worth more — it's about which one you'd actually use. The ID. Buzz is the better vehicle by every measurable standard and the easier thing to live with: it's warrantied, it's air-conditioned, it will do 75 mph on an interstate without drama. The Bay Window will not. A 1700cc air-cooled Bus is a 60-mph vehicle with a following breeze, it needs valve adjustments and it will teach you things about carburetion you didn't want to learn.
It is also the one that stops traffic. A well-sorted green Bay Window with new brakes and suspension is a usable classic that has held value stubbornly for two decades, and a restoration to this spec is expensive to replicate. The ID. Buzz, by contrast, has already taken a meaningful depreciation hit — early 1st Editions are trading well below sticker. If you want the asset, the argument is closer than the price tags suggest.
The fine print worth knowing
This is where a reader should slow down, because the marketing and the official rules do not tell the same story.
The giveaway page says there are "Two prizes. Two winners" — the first winner picks a van, the second gets the other, and each takes $10,000 cash. The official rules say something different: "There will be one (1) Grand Prize available," a single winner who chooses one of the two vans, with a maximum ARV of $76,000 and no cash award mentioned anywhere in the document. The deadline splits too. The giveaway page and the VanLife US giveaways index both print 11:59pm PST on October 2, 2026; the rules close entries at 11:59:59 p.m. ET the same day — three hours earlier than advertised. Anyone planning a last-day entry should work to Eastern time.
On the credit side of the ledger: the rules name a genuine third-party administrator, American Sweepstakes & Promotion Co., Inc. of Rochester, New York, they carry a real mail-in free-entry route with postmark and received-by deadlines that line up with the entry period, and the operator's own giveaways index shows "Winner Announced" on several past draws. The free-entry procedure, the mailing address and the eligibility terms are set out in the official rules at vanlife.us/pages/classic-vs-electric-rules, and that document — not the sales page — is what governs.
Paid entries run on a tier system, with the cheapest rung a $15 recurring monthly VIP membership for 40 entries and one-time packs starting higher; merchandise purchases also carry entries. The winner is responsible for registration, licensing and all local, state and federal taxes on the prize, which on a $76,000 ARV is not a trivial bill.

Why It's Special
The 1st Edition was a launch-only, one-model-year trim on the ID. Buzz — the fully loaded version VW used to introduce the electric microbus in North America, with the electrochromic panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio and 12-way massaging front seats standard rather than optional. Pairing it against a restored 1972 Bay Window is the neat trick here: the same silhouette, the same idea, separated by 53 years and about 300 horsepower.
Our value estimate
$66,000
VanLife US's official rules put a maximum ARV of $76,000 on the Grand Prize, and the giveaway page advertises $10,000 cash alongside whichever van the winner takes. Back that cash out and roughly $66,000 is left for the vehicle itself, which is where this estimate sits. It squares reasonably with the market: a 2025 ID. Buzz 1st Edition with 4MOTION stickered around $69,995 before destination when new, and used examples have already softened — a 5,424-mile 1st Edition 4MOTION was listed at $62,590 on Carvana and a dealer car at $58,489, while Kelley Blue Book puts resale value nearer $49,000. The odometer on the prize van is unpublished, and that matters: a delivery-mileage example supports the operator's figure, a used one lands closer to the high $50s. The classic is the cheaper option on paper — recent 1972 Type 2 campers sold for $28,250 (June 2026) and $28,888 (November 2025) against a market average around $22,000 for T2 Westfalia campers, though only those two recent dated sales were close enough to compare, and a restoration this thorough would sit meaningfully above them.
Editorial estimate based on recent comparable sales — not an appraisal.
